How to Write CGPA on a Resume (With Examples)

By

The clearest way to show CGPA on a resume, when to add a percentage, how to handle an in-progress degree, and examples for Indian and international applications.

Resume education line showing CGPA 8.6 out of 10

Write your CGPA with its scale, for example "CGPA: 8.6/10", in the education section next to your degree and graduation year. Adding the scale removes any doubt about whether 8.6 is out of 10 or a different maximum, and it is the single most common thing recruiters say is missing.

The Basic Format

B.Tech, Computer Science and Engineering, XYZ University, 2022 to 2026 CGPA: 8.6/10

Keep it on one line under the degree. Use two decimals if your grade card does, and do not round up: 8.56 becomes 8.56 or 8.5, not 8.6.

When to Add a Percentage

Add a percentage only when:

  • the job posting or form asks for one, or
  • you are applying to a country or employer that does not use CGPA.

Show the formula so the reader knows it is a conversion, not marks:

CGPA: 8.6/10 (81.7% using CGPA x 9.5)

Use your university's official formula. If it publishes none, keep the CGPA alone. CGPA to Percentage: Which Formula Does Your University Use? explains the common rules.

If You Are Still Studying

Show the CGPA so far and say how many semesters it covers:

B.Tech, Mechanical Engineering, expected 2027 CGPA: 7.9/10 (after 5 of 8 semesters)

Use the SGPA to CGPA Calculator with your semester results to get the exact current figure.

For Applications Abroad

  • Keep the original scale, for example "CGPA 8.2/10".
  • Do not convert it to a 4.0 GPA yourself unless the application asks. Credential evaluators such as WES produce their own conversion from your transcript, subject by subject, and a self-made figure that differs from theirs can cause confusion.
  • If the form requires a 4.0 GPA field and gives no rule, note the method you used.

Should You Include CGPA at All?

As a fresher, yes. Most campus and entry-level hiring filters on it. Many people drop it once they have a few years of work experience, unless an employer asks for it. If your CGPA is below a stated cut-off, leaving it off will not help, because the form will usually ask anyway; focus the resume on projects and results instead. See What Is a Good CGPA? for typical benchmarks.

Common Mistakes

  • Writing "CGPA 8.6" without the scale.
  • Using the latest SGPA instead of the cumulative CGPA.
  • Rounding up past the printed value.
  • Giving a percentage without saying how it was converted.
  • Listing school marks in more detail than the degree.
