What Is SGPA?

SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) is the credit-weighted average of the grade points you earned in one semester. Each subject contributes in proportion to its credits, so a 4-credit theory paper moves your SGPA four times as much as a 1-credit lab. Most Indian universities that follow the UGC Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) report SGPA on a 10-point scale, and your CGPA is later built from these semester values.

How to Use the SGPA Calculator

Copy the values straight from your semester grade card. The calculator updates as you type, and nothing leaves your browser.

  • Choose whether your grade card shows letter grades (O, A+, A...) or grade points (10, 9, 8...).
  • Enter each subject name (optional), select its grade, and type its credits.
  • Add or remove rows until every graded subject of the semester is listed, including labs and projects.
  • Read your SGPA, the credits you earned with a pass grade, and a percentage estimate.

SGPA Formula

Multiply each subject grade point by its credits to get credit points, add the credit points, and divide by the total credits registered in the semester.

SGPA = Sum(Credits x Grade Point) / Sum(Credits)

The 10-point grade scale used by most universities

The UGC CBCS guidelines recommend the letter grades below. Your university may use slightly different names or cut-offs, so check the grade card legend if a letter is missing.

Worked SGPA Example

A student takes five subjects worth 14 credits in total. The table shows how the credit points are built before dividing.

Semester 3 grade card

Total credit points are 122 and total credits are 14, so SGPA = 122 / 14 = 8.714, which rounds to 8.71.

Why Credits Matter More Than the Number of Subjects

A simple average of grade points treats every subject the same. That is wrong whenever credits differ. In the example above, a simple average of 9, 8, 10, 7 and 10 is 8.80, while the credit-weighted SGPA is 8.71. The gap grows when a low grade sits in a high-credit subject, which is exactly the case students most want to understand.

  • Raising a 4-credit subject by one grade point adds 4 credit points.
  • Raising a 1-credit lab by one grade point adds only 1 credit point.
  • So when you plan study time, the heavy-credit subjects give the biggest SGPA gain.

What Happens With a Fail (F) or Absent Grade?

Under most CBCS regulations an F or Ab grade carries 0 grade points, but its credits still count in the denominator for that semester. That is why one failed 4-credit subject can pull an SGPA down sharply. When you clear the subject in a later attempt, many universities recalculate using the new grade, but rules differ on whether the original semester SGPA is revised. The calculator shows "credits earned" separately so you can see how many credits a pass grade has actually secured.

Converting SGPA to Percentage

There is no single conversion. The calculator shows the widely used SGPA x 9.5 estimate, but some universities publish their own rule, such as (CGPA - 0.75) x 10 at VTU or CGPA x 10 at Anna University. Always use the formula printed on your grade card or in your university regulations when you fill in a form. Our GPA to Percentage Converter covers more scales.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate SGPA from grades?

Multiply each subject grade point by its credits, add the results, and divide by total credits. For example, grades of 9, 8 and 10 in subjects worth 4, 4 and 3 credits give (36 + 32 + 30) / 11 = 8.91.

What is a good SGPA?

On a 10-point scale, 8.0 or above is generally considered very good, and 9.0 or above is excellent. Many recruiters and postgraduate programs set cut-offs between 6.0 and 7.5, so check the exact requirement you are aiming for.

Is SGPA the same as GPA?

SGPA is the GPA for one semester. "GPA" is a general term, while SGPA names the semester-level value that Indian universities print on each grade card.

Do failed subjects count in SGPA?

Usually yes. An F grade carries 0 points but its credits stay in the total, which lowers the SGPA until the subject is cleared and recalculated under your university rules.

Can I enter grade points instead of letters?

Yes. Switch "Enter grades as" to Grade points and type the number printed on your grade card, from 0 to 10.

How is SGPA different from CGPA?

SGPA covers one semester, while CGPA covers every semester completed so far. Use the SGPA to CGPA Calculator to combine your semester SGPAs.
