Calculation Methods

Simple Average vs Credit-Based CGPA

Learn when to use simple CGPA averaging and when credit weighting gives a more accurate result.

Simple Average vs Credit-Based CGPA

The correct CGPA method depends on how your university defines cumulative performance. The two most common approaches are simple average and credit-based average.

Simple average

Simple average treats each semester equally. Add all SGPAs together, then divide by the number of semesters.

Credit-based average

Credit-based calculation weighs each semester by credit load. Multiply each SGPA by its credits, add the weighted values, then divide by total credits.

Which should you choose?

Use simple average when every semester has equal weight or your institution explicitly says to average SGPAs. Use credit-based calculation when semester credits differ.
